Shingles and chicken pox are caused by the same virus and one is prone to shingles if one has had a bout of chicken pox. The virus responsible for this ailment is known as varicella- zoster virus and is responsible for herpes as it belongs to the same family. If you have suffered from a bout of chicken pox and recuperated, then it is a wrong notion to think that the virus has left your system, the truth is that it goes into hibernation and can be brought back into action anytime. This virus if triggered can bring in a bout of cold sores and genital herpes; shingles is nothing but rashes at the most unconceivable parts of the body, though they can appear anywhere. The bottomline is that if you have a weak immune system or are in contact with a person who has a weak immune system then you are more susceptible to a malady like shingles.
