Conjunctivitis, otherwise known as pink eye, can either be caused by an infection - where there will be a greenish discharge or crusting of the eyelids in the morning, or by an allergy - most usually hay fever when itching is a prominent symptom, or by an irritant such as chillies.
Some of the important symptoms of conjunctivitis are the inflammation of the eyeball and underside of the eyelids. Initially the eyes are red and itchy but later on there may be a watery secretion. In many cases this condition becomes serious and there is a formation of pus, which while sleeping dries up and makes the lashes sticky together.
Calcarea carbonicum, once per day for three days is suggested by homeopathy doctors to treat conjunctivitis for infants who suffer from other problems like seating and constipation. For those who are severe victims, Belladonna is found to be very effective.
Other home remedies for pink eye include infusions made of Eyebright or of fennel seeds. If you don't have Eyebright, just use tincture and put a few drops in a glass of water. Fennel seeds need to be boiled for obtaining an effective infusion. They are helpful in reducing the pain and the inflammation.
Bacterial conjunctivitis is associated with sticky discharge or crusting near the eye. The other causes of conjunctivitis are external factors like the pollution, chemicals in shampoo, chlorine in swimming pools, dust, smoke, pollens, animal dander and other allergies. Viral and bacterial conditions are contagious but not the one caused by external factors.
The first and best cure is to remove the cause of the inflammation. If there has not been any trauma to the eye then it is likely to be either a viral or bacterial infection or allergic. In case of infection your Physician or Herbalist can advise further. For allergic conjunctivitis or pink eye using anti inflammatory food supplements may help.
Colloidal silver has been found to be very effective also when used as eye drops so get your hands on some of this at your local natural health store. There are some oils that have also proven effective in helping the body to heal itself of conjunctivitis. Some of these are chamomile, lavender and rose oils.

Infection usually begins with one eye but can quickly spread to the other eye in cases of viral or bacterial conjunctivitis.
