Lower Abdomen Pain in Pregnancy

During the first few weeks of pregnancy, one experiences morning sickness and vomiting. Due to these reasons and as the embryo gets attached to the uterine wall; there may be mild abdominal pain. As the pregnancy progresses, the baby grows and it causes the muscles and ligaments in abdominal portion of the body to stretch. If one suddenly gets up after sitting for quite some time, or one coughs and sneezes, pain and discomfort is caused to the mother.

Reasons for abdominal pain:

During the early stages of pregnancy, pain is due to implantation of foetus and due to weakness caused by severe morning sickness.

During the second trimester, the most common reason for aching in lower abdomen is stretching of muscles supporting the womb. As mentioned, this pain is severe only when one moves all of a sudden, like getting upfrom a chair.

Apart from this, gas pains and bloating due to pregnancy hormones is also a significant contributor to abdominal pain.

During the last trimester of your pregnancy, Braxton Hicks contraction is the common reason for pain. Women tend to confuse the abdominal pain with labour pains. Also, as the due date approaches, cramps become a regular feature to indicate that the final day is approaching. Constipation and heartburn continue to be the reasons to cause abdominal discomfort in this period too.

Some tips to reduce the abdominal pain:

When you feel abdominal pain, the most effective measure that must be taken is to just sit and relax for some time. Sit for a while and put your feet up, and after a few minutes you will feel better. Also avoid sudden changes in your position, and especially avoid motions that require sharp turning from waist.

If you are having gas pains, walking around and doing some household chores can relieve you from discomfort. Bending slightly forward can also help to reduce the pain. Take frequent breaks from your work if it requires you to keep sitting for hours.

The most common reason for abdominal pain is constipation and heartburn. To reduce these problems, it is essential that you intake lot of fluids. Consume lot of water and clear fluids like lemonade and ginger ale. Apart from this, have smaller, healthier snacks rather than binging on heavy fried foods, which slow down the digestion process and cause gas troubles.

Taking a hot long bath in the tub can also do wonders in this regard. It gently eases out your pain by relaxing the muscles of the region.

A good home remedy is to boil 4 teaspoons of fennel seeds and cumin together in about a litre of water. After cooling it, consume it throughout the day in small quantities to relieve the gas troubles.

Another important tip is to never take medications without consultation with your doctor. Never taking any pills for constipation or pain killers on your own, as it might prove harmful for the baby.

When to consult the doctor:

If the pain is severe and persisting, it is not a good sign. If you rest for some time and even then the pain does not reduce, it is important that you convey this to your doctor. Pain accompanied with cramps, chills, fever, spotting or vaginal discharge may indicate troublesome situations like miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, and preterm labour. The doctor will conduct tests to know the reason for pain, which may be only constipation or Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) as well. So, do not worry, just let your doctor know if you are having any troubles. Lower abdomen pain in pregnancy.
